Île de la Gonâve, island belonging to Haiti, in the Gonâve Gulf. Île de la Gonâve is 56 km (35 mi) long and up to 16 km (10 mi) wide. It is located 50 km (30 mi) northwest of the city of Port-au-Prince. The island has a limestone surface and the soil is largely barren, owing to low rainfall. Population (2005 estimate) 199,900.
