Chiquinquirá

Chiquinquirá, town in the department of Boyacá, Colombia, 115 km (71 mi) north of Bogotá. Chiquinquirá is 2,570 m (8,430 ft) above sea level and is located within a cattle-raising region. Thousands of pilgrims come to Chiquinquirá each December to see a painting of the Virgin Mary that is reputed to cause miracles. Also in the town are a state college and three colleges for women. Population (2005) 54,949.
