Strawberry and Chocolate, motion picture about a homosexual artist and freethinker who falls in love with a younger, conservative heterosexual Communist, based on a short story by Senal Paz. Released in 1995, this award-winning Cuban film was directed by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea. David’s girlfriend breaks up with him after he takes her to a run-down hotel. Distraught and questioning his entire life’s choices, David meets Diego in a coffee shop and strikes up a conversation with him. Diego becomes attracted to the younger man, and they spend a great deal of time together, sharing ideas about contemporary Cuba, art, Communism, and love.
