Museo Picasso

Museo Picasso, collection of paintings and other works by Spanish artist Pablo Picasso, housed in three medieval palaces in Barcelona, Spain. The museum was founded in 1963 and expanded rapidly, receiving many donations of works from Picasso and his family. In 1968 Picasso presented 58 works to the museum, including a famous series of paintings and oil sketches relating to Las meninas (The Maids of Honor, 1656, Prado, Madrid), a famous work by Spanish artist Diego Velázquez. After Picasso’s death in 1973 his widow and heirs donated a large number of graphic works and ceramics. As its collection grew, the museum expanded from its original location, the remarkable 15th-century Palau Berenguer d’Aguilar, to absorb the adjoining Casa del Baro de Catellet and the Palau Meca.

The museum’s collection comprises numerous works from the artist’s early years. There are many drawings and paintings from his childhood in Málaga in the Andalucía region of southern Spain and from his years in Barcelona. There are also portraits of Picasso’s family.
