Matanzas (city)

Matanzas (city), city, western Cuba, capital of Matanzas Province, on Matanzas Bay, near Havana (with which it is connected by railroad). Matanzas is an important sugar-exporting port. Industries include distilling, tanning, and fishing. The city is a major tourist center, and the famous Bellamar Caves are nearby. Population (2000 estimate) 124,754.
