South Pole

South Pole, point at the southern end of the earth's axis, in central Antarctica, about 2600 km (about 1600 mi) from the south magnetic pole (see Magnetic Pole). It was first reached on December 14, 1911, by the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen.
