Bloody Assizes

Bloody Assizes, name given to a series of treason trials conducted by Lord Chief Justice George Jeffreys in the western counties of England after the suppression in 1685 of a rebellion led by James Scott, duke of Monmouth, a claimant to the English throne. Jeffreys conducted the trials with ruthless disregard of the legal rights of the defendants. He sentenced more than 300 persons to death and more than 800 to penal transportation to the British colonies in America.
