Sri Jayawardenepura or Kotte, town in western Sri Lanka, in Western Province, a suburb of Sri Lanka's commercial capital, Colombo. The administrative capital of Sri Lanka, Sri Jayawardenepura is located in a low-lying, formerly marshy area. From 1415 until replaced by Colombo in 1565, Sri Jayawardenepura was the capital of a Sinhalese kingdom. Population (2001) 115,826.
