Narragansett Bay, inlet of the Atlantic Ocean, extending into eastern Rhode Island. It is 42 km (26 mi) long, and between 5 and 19 km (3 and 12 mi) wide. It receives the Taunton, Blackstone, Providence, and Pawtuxet rivers, and has many islands, of which Rhode, Prudence, and Conanicut are the largest. The city of Newport is by the bay entrance; at the head of the bay is Providence, the state capital.
