Battle of Manila Bay

Battle of Manila Bay, naval engagement of the Spanish-American War, fought between the U.S. Asiatic Squadron, commanded by Commodore George Dewey, and the Spanish Pacific fleet. The action took place on May 1, 1898. Under orders to destroy or capture the Spanish fleet, Dewey brought his squadron of six ships into Manila Bay during the night of April 30. At daybreak he contacted the Spanish fleet, numbering ten vessels, off the city of Manila. Opening fire at close range, Dewey quickly sank several Spanish vessels. By noon the remainder of the Spanish fleet was completely crippled. Spanish casualties during the engagement totaled 381 killed or wounded. American casualties were 8 wounded.
