Kābul (river), river, southwestern Asia, rising in northeastern Afghanistan at the base of the Wonay Pass in the Paghmān Range. After flowing generally east across Afghanistan and entering western Pakistan through the Mohmand Hills, the river joins the Indus River at Attock City. It passes through the Afghan cities of Kābul and Jalālābād. The Kābul is used chiefly for irrigation; a dam has been constructed for this purpose at Jalālābād. The river is 700 km (435 mi) long and is navigable below Jalālābād.
