Sea of Marmara or Sea of Marmora (ancient Propontis), inland sea, northwestern Turkey, connected to the Black Sea by the Bosporus Strait and to the Aegean Sea by the Dardanelles Strait. It separates the European part of Turkey from the Asian part. The sea contains several islands on which are located famous quarries of white marble; the largest island is Marmara (130 sq km/50 sq mi). The sea is 282 km (175 mi) long and has an area of 11,000 sq km (4,300 sq mi).
