Rappahannock

Rappahannock, river, rising in the Blue Ridge Mountains section of the Allegheny Mountains, northern Virginia. It flows 340 km (210 mi) southeast to Chesapeake Bay. The Rapidan River is the chief tributary. Many battles of the American Civil War were fought in the region of the Rappahannock.
