1998: New Caledonians Vote for More Autonomy

Voters in New Caledonia overwhelmingly supported an agreement on November 8, 1998, to give the Pacific island territory more autonomy. The “shared sovereignty” agreement transfers broad new powers to local authorities and delays a referendum on independence for at least 15 years.
