The Academy of Plato

The Academy of Plato
The Academy, the school established by Greek philosopher Plato, is depicted in this Roman mosaic from the early 1st century ad. Plato, third from the left, leans against a tree that symbolizes wisdom and knowledge. The Acropolis appears in the background. The mosaic, from the house of Siminius Stephanus in Pompeii (Italy), is now in the National Archaeological Museum, Naples.
