Mask of Xipe Totec
This stone mask depicts the Aztec fertility god Xipe Totec (“The Flayed One”). The cult of Xipe Totec involved skinning a victim whose skin was then worn by a priest. Xipe Totec also appears in Mixtec and Zapotec mythology. The mask is now in the British Museum, London.
