French artist Georges Seurat’s drawing of a trombonist (1887-1888) in chalk and conte crayon is one of several studies for his painting Circus Side Show in the Metropolitan Museum in New York City. His technique of drawing without lines is a visual equivalent of his painting technique known as pointillism, in which he juxtaposed dots of unmixed color. The solemnity and stillness of these figures belies their appearance in a giddy, fast-paced circus sideshow.
