| After World War II the Viet Minh, a nationalist force led by Ho Chi Minh, sought to overthrow French colonial rule. The resulting struggle, often called the First Indochina War, lasted from 1946 until 1954. In October 1950 French troops abandoned the military post of Cao Bang, which had been overrun by the Viet Minh. The conflict then broadened in scope: The United States aided France, and the Viet Minh accepted aid from China. |
