Umayyad Mosque, Damascus

Umayyad Mosque, Damascus
The Great Mosque in Damascus, Syria, known today as the Umayyad Mosque, was built at a time when the city was a political and cultural center of the Islamic world. The inner courtyard of the mosque is seen here, along with a structure on columns that is known as the treasury. The mosaics covering the treasury depict floral and tree motifs as well as imaginary buildings.
