Louis Pasteur, Founder of Microbiology
French scientist Louis Pasteur made important contributions to many scientific fields during the mid-1800s. He is considered the founder of the field of microbiology, working with the germ theory of disease to establish and explain the causes for many diseases. In 1857 he showed that microorganisms are responsible for food spoilage.
