Poland's Lake District
Mazury, a region in northeastern Poland, encompasses more than 2,000 lakes formed by meltwaters of the Vistula ice sheet. The district, which includes several provinces, was the site of major German World War I victories during the Battles of the Masurian Lakes. Mazury later passed to Poland after World War II. The largest settlement in the region is Olsztyn, an important railroad and industrial center.
