| Late in August 1862, Confederate General Robert E. Lee attempted to drive Union forces from Virginia. Union General John Pope, waiting at Manassas for General George McClellan’s forces to join him, discovered the movement of Southern troops to his rear and attacked in what was known as the Second Battle of Bull Run, or the Second Battle of Manassas. However, a Confederate counterattack inflicted heavy casualties on the Union forces, driving Pope to a disorderly withdrawal to Washington, D.C.
