Neptune has a major influence on the Kuiper Belt, a disk-shaped collection of small, icy objects in the outer solar system. The belt extends from just inside Neptune’s orbit to far beyond the orbit of Pluto. The number of times some objects in the Kuiper Belt orbit the Sun is linked by regular patterns to Neptune’s orbit. For example, Pluto and objects called plutinos orbit the Sun two times for every three orbits by Neptune. Objects near the outer edge of the Kuiper Belt make one orbit for every two orbits by Neptune.
