A number of West African kingdoms prospered in the 18th and early 19th centuries, especially while European traders came in search of slaves, gold, and other goods. The Ashanti Kingdom covered much of what is now Ghana. The two Bambara states of Segu and Kaarta came to power in what is now Mali. The Kingdom of Benin arose as early as the 12th century in what is now Nigeria, but by the 19th century it was in decline. The Kingdom of Dahomey was founded in the 1600s in southern Benin and flourished from the slave trade.
