| A jet of electrons traveling at nearly the speed of light reveals a supermassive black hole at the heart of the elliptical galaxy M87. Twisting magnetic fields funneled superheated gas into the narrow stream of particles that emit light. The gas came from a disk of material swirling around the black hole as it swallowed 2 billion times the mass of the Sun. | ||||||
