| Barack Obama became the first African American president and 44th president of the United States after he was elected with 53 percent of the vote in November 2008. Obama was elected a U.S. senator from Illinois in 2004. He announced his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination in early 2007 and stunned political observers with his upset of Hillary Rodham Clinton. During the 2008 general election he defeated the Republican Party candidate, John McCain. Obama took office on January 20, 2009. |
