The popular children’s story “Little Red Riding Hood” contains many thematic components common to the fairy tale: a young heroine undergoes trials and obstacles, good and evil characters are clearly defined opposites, and the heroine receives help in the form of magic. A fairy tale may survive many generations through its retelling. In this way, oral tradition preserves a culture’s artistic heritage without writing.
