| At the May Day stadium in P'yŏngyang, North Korea, tens of thousands of people celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Korean Workers’ Party. In the stands an elaborate backdrop is created by nearly 50,000 students holding flash cards, or placards, that form a hammer to represent industrial workers, a spear to symbolize the army, and a sickle to portray farm laborers. The backdrop changes constantly to air other themes and messages. The Arirang Mass Games, as they are known, also feature music and gymnastics during a 90-minute spectacle. |
