Reclining Buddha in Pegu
The Shwethalyaung in Pegu is one of the largest statues of the reclining Buddha in the world. The statue, which is said to have been built in 994, was covered by jungle after the destruction of Pegu in 1757; it was rediscovered at the end of the 19th century when the British built a railway during the colonization of Myanmar. Countless faithful followers come to meditate in front of the Buddha, whose face reflects a profound peace.
