Odysseus and Calypso

Odysseus and Calypso
The Greek warrior Odysseus, shown in silhouette on the left, spends seven years as a captive of the sea nymph Calypso, who has fallen in love with him. This moody and mysterious painting by Swiss artist Arnold Böcklin suggests the tension between the two. Painted in 1882, the work is in the Basel Art Museum in Switzerland.
