| Roberto Clemente of Puerto Rico was one of baseball’s greatest players of his era. During his 18-year career with the Pittsburgh Pirates he won the National League batting title four times and helped the Pirates capture World Series titles in 1960 and 1971. A year later, Clemente died in a plane crash while bringing supplies to Nicaraguan earthquake victims. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973, without the traditional five-year waiting period after a player’s career ends. |
