This British map of southwest Asia, North Africa, and southern Europe illustrates ethnic and national divisions within the Ottoman Empire during the early 1700s. Notations on the map indicate place names, geographical features, and observations about the people of each region; dotted lines mark regional boundaries. At the time this map was made, in 1721, the Ottoman Empire was beginning to decline.
The French cartographer Guillaume de L'Isle created this map. De L'Isle gained recognition for his scientific approach to mapmaking and his ability to identify and correct misrepresentations in existing maps, including those of his former teachers. He is credited with correcting the longitudinal width of the Mediterranean Sea by moving its northern limit south by several degrees, as reflected in this map. |
