Great Plaza of Monte Albán
Monte Albán, the first major urban center in Mesoamerica, developed in the Oaxaca Valley of central Mexico. Built on a mountaintop, the city was the political and ceremonial center of the Zapotec state, which thrived from 500 bc to ad 750. The ruins of several palaces and temples surround what was once the city’s plaza center.
