Antananarivo, Madagascar
Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar and formerly known as Tananarive, is located in the central part of the island. Merina rulers founded the city in the early 17th century. In 1895 the French captured the city, and it became the capital of the French dependency, Madagascar. When the country achieved independence in 1960, Antananarivo remained the capital.
