Constitutional Convention
In May 1787, at the age of 81, Benjamin Franklin served as a member of the Constitutional Convention that met in Philadelphia to draft a constitution for the newly created United States of America. Although none of Franklin’s leading ideas was adopted, his prestige, powers of persuasion, and unfailing good humor contributed to agreement on the final document. George Washington served as president of the convention, and Franklin is shown seated, with a cane, in front of him.
