Parthenon

Parthenon
The Parthenon, built between 447 and 432 bc, is the greatest monument of classical Athens. Originally a temple to Athena Parthenos (the Virgin Athena), it was eventually converted into a Christian church and later into a mosque. The structure survived largely intact until 1687, when the Turkish gunpowder stored inside it was detonated in the course of a siege by Venetian troops.
