| Groves of golden aspen trees signal the arrival of autumn in the Rocky Mountains. They are frequently called quaking aspens because their long flattened leafstalks make the leaves flutter easily in the breeze. Aspens can be found growing above 2,300 m (7,500 ft) elevation throughout the Rocky Mountains. Aspens are among the first plants to colonize areas disturbed by avalanches, landslides, or fire. |
