Gondolas and other water taxis wait for passengers at the entrance to the Grand Canal of Venice. Across the way rise the domes of Santa Maria della Salute. Completed in 1681, the church honors a decree of the Venetian senate to build a church to Mary in hopes that the city be saved from a devastating plague that decimated the population from 1630 to 1631. In the distance stands the large bell tower of Saint Mark’s square next to the façade of Saint Mark’s Cathedral.
