W. C. Handy

W. C. Handy
American composer and cornet player W. C. Handy is sometimes called the Father of the Blues. Although the music first emerged from the South in the late 19th century, Handy was the first to write down and publish songs with the word “blues” in the title. Among his compositions is the early standard “St. Louis Blues” (1914).
