| The Chinese government sponsored several unprecedented voyages of exploration in the 15th century. After learning much about the surrounding world, the Chinese abruptly suspended all exploration and reverted to a policy of seclusion. This was symbolized by the subsequent construction of the massive Great Wall, meant to protect the Chinese from outsiders. | ||||||
