From Exploration to Seclusion
The Chinese government sponsored several unprecedented voyages of exploration in the 15th century. After learning much about the surrounding world, the Chinese abruptly suspended all exploration and reverted to a policy of seclusion. This was symbolized by the subsequent construction of the massive Great Wall, meant to protect the Chinese from outsiders.
