Egyptian singer Umm Kulthum was revered throughout Egypt, North Africa, and the Near East for her powerful voice and improvisational skill. She recorded more than 300 songs during her lifetime. This clip is from Kulthum’s first film, Widad (1936). Her name has been transliterated many different ways.
