Coral Reproduction

Corals reproduce by releasing eggs and sperm into ocean water. The sperm and egg cells join to form oval-shaped larvae called planulae. A planula swims or drifts in the ocean for up to 30 days before it settles onto the ocean bottom, a rock, or other structure. There it transforms into a single coral polyp. This polyp divides repeatedly, eventually forming a coral colony that may contain thousands of polyps.
