The opera Salome (1905) by German composer Richard Strauss was based on the play of that name written by Irish-born Oscar Wilde and first performed in 1894. At the play’s climax, Salome kisses the severed head of the dead John the Baptist. American soprano Leontyne Price sings this excerpt from the last scene of the opera, “Ah! Du wolltest mich nicht deinen Mund küssen lassen, Jokanaan!” (“Ah! You didn't want to let me kiss your lips, Jokanaan!”).
"Aria: 'Ah!
