Comet Hale-Bopp
Comets develop one or more tails of gas and dust when they near the Sun. When Comet Hale-Bopp passed near Earth in 1996 and 1997, astronomers discovered it had three tails—two ion tails and one sodium tail. The sodium tail was not visible to the naked eye.
