| French explorer Samuel de Champlain and two of his men join Montagnais, Algonquin, and Huron warriors in an attack on an Iroquois camp in 1609 in this undated illustration. Champlain and his allies easily defeated the Iroquois, who had never before seen firearms. The battle, fought in eastern North America on the shores of what is now known as Lake Champlain, marked the beginning of 150 years of hostilities between the French and the Iroquois. |
