Mandan Earth Lodge

Mandan Earth Lodge
Several Indians gather around the fire pit in a Mandan earth lodge. Farming peoples of the Great Plains lived in earth lodges, dome-shaped dwellings roofed by earth and entered by a covered passageway. Raised sleeping platforms ran along the walls, and a hole in the roof vented smoke. The structures were spacious enough to keep several horses tethered inside.
