Amazon Slash-and-Burn Agriculture

Amazon Slash-and-Burn Agriculture
Yanomami family members stand outside of their home in the Amazon rain forest after felling and burning trees to make way for crops, a practice called slash-and-burn agriculture. The burning of trees and vegetation enriches the poor rain forest soil enough to permit agriculture for about three years, after which the plot must be abandoned and left to lie fallow for a decade or more.
