Signing of the James Bay and Northern Québec Agreement

Signing of the James Bay and Northern Québec Agreement
In the early 1970s the Cree and Inuit sued the Québec government to prevent the building of a hydroelectric project, known as the James Bay Project, on traditional Cree hunting grounds. The Cree, Inuit, and the Québec government agreed to the James Bay and Northern Québec Agreement of 1975, which gave the Cree and Inuit financial compensation and the right to self-government if they gave up their claims to the territory. Billy Diamond, left, representing the Cree, signs the agreement while Judd Buchanan, center, federal Indian Affairs minister, and Québec premier Robert Bourassa watch.
