| Wigwams were the most common house type of the Algonquian peoples of the East. The dome-shaped wigwam consisted of a framework of bent saplings covered with mats of bark or reeds or, in rainy areas, with animal skins. The wigwams depicted in this engraving belonged to the Winnebago of Wisconsin, who lived surrounded by Algonquian peoples and adopted many of their ways of life, including their dwellings. | ||||||
