During the mid-1960s San Francisco emerged as the center of the so-called hippie movement, in which participants experimented with alternative lifestyles, including the use of hallucinogenic drugs. Several San Francisco rock groups became identified with this movement, performing in a style known as psychedelic rock at large youth-dominated gatherings in and around the city. One of the most successful of these was Jefferson Airplane, led by lead singer Grace Slick; the group scored a big hit in 1967 with “Somebody to Love.”
